The current editor-in-chief of UP Baguio Outcrop, Jesusa Paquibot, was sued for libel by one Arts and Communications Department professor on the basis of a lampoon article that was circulated on July 2, 2011 issue. Paquibot allegedly wrote a satirical item entitled “Mahadera and Friends Edishaun”, concerning to someone who is very sensitive to noise; in effect, the self-confessed offended party whom she identified herself as Ma. Rina Locsin-Afable, one of the university professors, filed a complaint before the City Prosecutor’s Office in Baguio docketed as INV-11-02414, for Libel.
In defense to Jesusa Paquibot’s alleged misdemeanor, the Outcrop Editorial Board drafted a statement of unity and determination, first of all an apology to Prof. Locsin-Afable for any emotional contempt the article had caused her. But asserted that the story did not mention any real name and has no ill-motive to humiliate the teacher or her family, that is, if she really claims being the one referred to.
The filing of said complaint was a staunch to the previously held student mass mobilization in opposition to the university’s impending budget cuts.
Thus, Outcrop strongly upholds vigilance and awareness on issues that hound the university and society.
The said civil case is ongoing trial for defendant’s cross- examination last June 19-20, 2012.
