Suspect in radioman’s slay arrested

A suspect in the murder of broadcaster Niel Jimena was arrested Wednesday morning, NUJP Negros Occidental chair Julius Mariveles reported.

Police have arrested Noel Guimeroy at around 6 a.m. in Bgy. Tinungan, Isabela town. Guimeroy and another suspect, Joel Calungsod, a former militiaman who remains at large, have been charged with murder.

Mariveles reported the provincial Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) arrested Guimeroy on the strength of a warrant of arrest issued by Silay City regional Trial Court Br. 69 Judge Felipe Banzon.

CIDG Chief Insp. Cresenciano Cordero said witnesses have identified Guemiroy as one of two two men aboard a motorcycle who chased down Jimena ang shot him. It was not clear however whether Guimeroy was the gunman or the driver.

The arrest came two weeks before the first year since Jimena was shot in E.B. Magalona on Aug. 22, 2011.

Jimena last worked as a blocktime host for station dyRI. Police earlier said his killing could be related to his work as a broadcaster and as former informant of the Drug Enforcement Agency and the police intelligence unit in Iloilo.
