International delegation to meet with UN Presidium on safety of journalists

An international delegation of media organizations and the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) of Qatar will meet with the United Nations (UN) Presidium in New York on Sept. 7 on protecting and improving the safety of journalists.

The meeting, to be held in the morning, will be joined by the chairman of the NHRC, the president of the International Federation of Journalists, officials of the NUJP, The Press Emblem Campaign, Federacion de periodistas de America Latina y Caribe, Federation of African Journalists and Federation of Arab Journalists.

The delegation will transmit recommendations to protect and improve the safety of journalists in dangerous situations. These recommendations were issued during an international conference in Doha last Jan. 22-23, 2012.

The NUJP, represented by chair Nestor Burgos Jr., will also turn over a letter from families of media victims of the Nov. 23, 2009 massacre in Ampatuan town, Maguindanao province in the Philippines.

Fifty-eight unarmed civilians including 32 media workers who were part of a convoy were gunned down allegedly by members and goons of a powerful political clan.

There will also be a press conference at 1 p.m. of Sept. 7.
