NUJP condemns Arab states’ demand to shut down Al Jazeera
June 24, 2017
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines condemns the demand of Arab states that Qatar shut down broadcasters Al Jazeera and Arabi 21, and online media sites Al-Araby Al-Jadeed and Middle East Eye, as part of the conditions to lift diplomatic and economic sanctions.
This demand would be laughable but for the all too dire implications not only for freedom of the press but for freedom of expression and thought in a region where these freedoms have always been in peril.
Al Jazeera, in particular, has played an invaluable role in broadening the discourse on current events and issues, not only in the Middle East but the world.
Shutting it and the other media outlets down would be a victory for tyranny.
