Iligan City radio anchor shot, injured near school

A radio broadcaster was wounded Monday morning after unidentified assailants shot him near the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology in Tibanga, Iligan City.

Information reaching the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) identified the victim as Jose Cagalawan Pantoja. He was described as a "hard-hitting political block timer."

"The victim was shot at about 7 a.m. today (Monday) using a cal-.45 pistol. Pantoja is being treated at Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital," the NUJP said.

A report on dzBB radio said the 44-year-old Pantoja sustained three gunshot wounds to his stomach. Authorities were quoted as saying that two motorcycle-riding assailants carried out the attack.

The incident comes a week after President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo announced that Director Gen. Avelino Razon Jr, new Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, would leave a legacy of solving killings and disappearances of political activists and journalists. - GMANews.TV
