Warden delays Adonis release even after posting bail

The warden of the Davao Penal Colony refused the release of Davao broadcaster Alexander Adonis even after he posted the 5,000-peso bail set by the Regional Trial Court on the second libel case filed against him Monday morning.

Superintendent Benjo Tesoro, the Depacol warden said, "We had to inform "higher correctional authorities" before obeying the court order to release Adonis."

Adonis, who had been convicted on libel charges filed by House Speaker Prospero Nograles, had been due for discharge on parole in February. The case stemmed from a series of commentaries in which he identified the congressman as the man who allegedly ran naked from a Manila hotel after he was caught by his paramour's husband.

However, his release was not implemented because of a second libel case filed against him by the woman mentioned in the commentaries.

On Monday morning, Judge George Omelio of RTC Branch 17 allowed Adonis to post a 5,000-peso bail on the second libel case.

Tesoro told NUJP Davao chapter that he could not release Adonis because he had to inform Bureau of Corrections director Oscar Caderon about the court order.
